In the company’s newest white paper, Business Travel in 2022, Sesilia Kalss, senior consulting manager of Global Business Consulting for American Express Global Business Travel (GBT), stated, “There just aren’t enough automobiles to match corporate demand.”

This is only one of the factors that are expected to influence business travel in 2022 and beyond. Kalss and six other professionals from the travel industry weigh in on the changes they expect to see in the next year.
1. The Role of the Travel Manager is Changing
Internal meetings are expected to rise the most this year, according to GBT research, when compared to in-person meetings in general. More travel managers will be involved in this expansion.
“As the barriers between work and home blur, travel and mobility become increasingly fundamental to conventional HR problems like employee experience, well-being, business culture, and retention,” said David Reimer, executive vice president of global clients and general manager of The Americas. “To meet emerging difficulties, travel managers will increasingly need to collaborate with executives and colleagues from diverse functions.”

Because of the crucial significance of the function, Reimer believes that the travel manager should be included in C-suite talks. “Rather than being given judgments at a later time, the program owner should at least be consulted in the early policymaking talks.” He went on to say, “They should be more active, not passive.”
2. Travelers Require Self-Assuredness
“Travelers are only happy and productive if they have a good time,” Raksa Ouk, vice president of digital strategy, stated. “In order for it to happen, people must feel cared for throughout the course of their journey.”
GBT highlighted an SAP Concur research in which 700 worldwide travel managers predicted changes in corporate travel standards or policies in the coming year. The top policy were real-time updates (54 percent) and pre-trip immunization requirements (51 percent).
“Travel managers can provide passengers peace of mind by leveraging technology and tools to keep them informed at every step of their trip—as they plan and book it, before they leave, and while they’re on the road—putting all the information they need at their fingertips,” Ouk concluded. “When travelers feel supported when away from home, it can raise their confidence and improve their well-being.”
3. Efforts to promote sustainability will continue
Marriott International and other hotel corporations have made promises to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This type of target is only becoming more popular.
“By 2022, we can expect corporations to ramp up their efforts to show genuine progress on lowering carbon emissions, especially Scope 3 (travel) emissions,” said Nora Lovell Marchant, vice president of global sustainability.
Despite this, travel will continue to be crucial to companies, posing a difficulty. “The conflict between travel demand and carbon reduction is a significant problem,” Marchant added. “However, while we examine ways to drive the investment and innovation needed to achieve zero-emissions travel, there are also enormous possibilities.”
She stated that in order to determine the best strategies to cut travel-related emissions, travel managers would need to collaborate closely with stakeholders and partners. “As we showed during the epidemic, our business can be resilient, resourceful, and collaborative—now we must apply these abilities to [climate change], the greatest problem our planet and sector face.”
4. A tumultuous return to aviation
“While bookings were durable in several areas, Omicron’s early impacts have slowed recovery, especially in Europe,” said Jeremy Suan Yee Quek, principal global air practice line head. “However, airlines should remain cautiously optimistic about the coming year.”
Due to lowered entrance restrictions in the United States, the North Atlantic air corridor, which connects the United States with the United Kingdom, saw bookings treble by the end of November 2021, according to Quek. “As a result,” he said, “carriers could gradually ramp up capacity between American cities and European capitals.”

“The worldwide semiconductor scarcity and its influence on auto manufacturing will be the main contributor to the automobile shortfall during the coming year,” Kalss added. The chip scarcity is anticipated to last through the second quarter of 2022, according to Gartner Inc.
Electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming more popular as a result of this worry. “In 2022, when global rental firms increase their commitment to EVs, this change will accelerate,” she concluded.
Increased interest in mobility-as-a-service (MaaS), which is currently the primary idea underpinning firms like Uber, which utilizes an app to access its services, is one innovation she advised to keep an eye on. However, the lack of globally standardized technical standards is preventing MaaS from reaching its full potential, according to Kalss.
She cited Finland as an example of a country that invented MaaS. The country is already leagues ahead of the competition, having merged public transportation, taxis, ridesharing, and the usage of private cars into a single digital service.
